Narrative:
Hawaii School Lunch Programs (HSLP) offer the children in schools free regulated meals based on the guidelines from the state and USDA. There are many ways in which Hawaii can differ in the meals offered compared to continental USA, as culture and local ingredients are an influence. From this, it is the Culinary Innovation Centers idea to create an informational packet to help local businesses and farms with how to navigate the HSLP. This not only gives the local businesses another means for revenue, but also able to integrate more local food dishes, and ingredients. Giving the children accessibility to diverse foods and produce, that we can find here in Hawaii. Creating an informational packet that includes the regulations for school meals, in a concise way can help the businesses and farmers who would like to be integrated into the HSLP.
The main way to gather the information needed would be through the government website. Where the main document has a few hundred pages worth of information materials. Navigating through this document could be a source of confusion as there is much to wade through, that is not necessary for the interested businesses to understand. Next I would need to create the document and presentation, so I would have a place to put the necessary information that will be found, so it is all in one place.
Researching and going through the government documents to gather the information to understand what is needed will take up a majority of the time. Through this activity process I would be able to create an outline of the informational packet, which includes adding graphics such as graphs or charts as needed. There also may be opportunity to create one myself if it seems fit. Once I have the information and graphics, and start to create my outline, I would begin to understand how the flow of the packet is important for the recipient. Using the outline, it would be the output, and would use the same guideline to create the actual informational packet and presentation.
The outcomes from this entire situation is to help educate and give access to the local businesses to learn about the HSLP, and if they are able to participate and integrate their product/produce through this state public schools. There are many reasons this is can create impacts. Most importantly, giving student aged children access to as much locally grown produce, gives opportunities for a healthier and diverse lifestyle. It is known that consuming locally grown produce is always a great choice. Another impact would be that this could give local businesses another chance of growing. The program could be a consistent way for the business to grow and showcase their product. Through this, it would give our local economy another chance of revenue, by giving these children access to culturally and locally made foods.
